Hi! I'm Natasha! Your Mount Baker elopement photographer, dog petter and donut eater. While photography is my first love, connecting with people is my love language. You'll find me lovin' on the big moments, the quiet moments, the silly moments – but especially the in between moments. The moments that are unadulterated and unfiltered. The ones where you are the real you. Here on the blog you'll find all of my favorite tips, tricks and resources for planning an elopement that's all about those moments.

HOW TO HAVE A WINTER MOUNT BAKER ELOPEMENT

Mt. Baker never ceases to amaze me with how beautiful it always is. Since we live in Bellingham, it's our main mountain (we see it everyday from the end of our block!), and we're here every few weeks or so to hike in the summer and fall, and snowshoe in the winter. But a winter Mount Baker elopement is truly something out of a winter wonderland dream. A winter elopement here isn't for the faint of heart, but if you're up for the adventure it's one of the most magical winter elopement locations in the U.S.

So what should you know for a winter elopement here? Here are my top tips:

  • Wear fleshtoned fleece leggings under your dress, or long underwear under your pants. Temperature can average 10-30 degrees on Mt. Baker on any given day and drop down into the negatives.
  • There WILL be snow, so be prepared! From late October/November to June Mt. Baker is covered in snow (we've been snowshoeing here in June!) so plan to bring snowshoes or at the very least some micro spikes for good traction. You don't want to be bustin' your ass on the trail on your elopement day.
    • fun fact: Mt. Baker holds the record for more snow in a season than anywhere else in the world at 95 feet of snow (that's 1,140 inches. CRAZY.) Perfect for a magical snowy adventure.
  • Bring hand warmers!
  • Don't trust the weather forecast. Often weather apps can't predict weather here perfectly for some reason. So plan for the worst, but there are plenty of opportunities to have spectacular blue bird days!
  • Have a backup plan – with any elopement, a good backup plan is always necessary in case the weather turns gnarly so when we plan your winter Mt. Baker elopement, we'll always come up with plans A and B!

THE COUPLE

When Elissa and Josh met at work as pediatric oncology travel nurses, and knew right from day one that they wanted to elope. The traditional wedding vibe just wasn't...their vibe, ya know? With work and day to day life being stressful enough, they were absolutely set having a stress-free day with just the two of them. Simple. Intentional. Focused on just them.

They came to me just two months before they planned to elope, they were totally open for anything (the absolute dream situation for any elopement photographer). No rings, no legal mumbo jumbo, what was important to them was pledging their love to each other, with no one there but us. What more could you need, right?

Knowing that they wanted to elope in the winter and with such a short amount of time until they wanted to tie the knot, we went over all of the beautiful and accessible options since most mountain-y locations are tough to reach this time of year. Knowing they were winter sports enthusiasts (they loved skiing, snowshoeing, and snowboarding) one of my recommended locations was Mt. Baker, and they immediately fell in love with it.

So we went over packing checklists, back up plans (thankfully...I'll get to that in a bit), and drove up the icy mountain to play in the snow.

DAY-OF

We woke up, checked all of the weather apps and were pleasantly surprised that the apps said that we had blue skies awaiting us up top! But as we drove up the mountain, the road got icy, and by the time we reached the Heather Meadows area, it was near white out conditions with some pretty high wind gusts. But, they were willing to explore still! We spent about 2 hours hiking the Bagley Lakes trail, visiting Iceberg Lake, catching snowflakes on our tongues together, and when things got too cold and wet, we went with plan B and visited a mossy forest down the mountain for their I do's. Talk about really getting everything the PNW has to offer in one day!

It was sheer magic being able to see the mountain in all of her majesty, and still walk around in a lush, green mossy forest all within a 30 min drive of each other.

So we warmed up, they said their I do's, popped a bottle of bubbly, and lit some celebratory broccoli! While photographing is my main love, my favorite part of the whole day was spending almost an hour by a crystal clear creek with Elissa and Josh just chatting about life, giggling over wild stories, and even though we only knew each other for a few short weeks, it felt like we had known each other for a lifetime.

Thank you so much, Elissa + Josh for letting me be part of your winter Mount Baker elopement!
