The ones where you are the real you. Here on the blog you'll find all of my favorite tips, tricks and resources for planning an elopement that's all about those moments.

So, you’ve decided to elope in Seattle? Hell yes. Whether you’re drawn to the city’s moody vibes, jaw-dropping scenery, or the fact that you can get married on a mountain and celebrate with cocktails downtown on the same day, Seattle is the ultimate elopement playground. But before you get swept away in dreamy PNW daydreams, let’s talk logistics. Here’s your ultimate step-by-step checklist to planning a stress-free, 100% you Seattle elopement.

1. CHOOSE YOUR SEATTLE ELOPEMENT VIBE

Seattle has everything. Want foggy forests? Got it. A golden-hour beach ceremony? Done. A courthouse wedding with major main-character energy? Absolutely. Before you pick your location, think about the vibe you want:

  • Urban chic – Rooftops, historic buildings, and skyline views.
  • Moody & nature-filled – Forest trails, waterfalls, or foggy mountaintops.
  • Coastal & wild – Secluded beaches, tide pools, and epic sea stacks.
  • Laid-back & cozy – A cabin in the woods, a backyard gathering, or an intimate Airbnb.

Once you’ve got that down, it’s time to pick a location. Wanna see some of the best Seattle elopement locations? Check out our full guide! The 25 Best Places to Elope Near Seattle

2. JUST YOU TWO? MAYBE GUESTS?

One of the biggest elopement decisions? Do you want it to be just the two of you, or do you want to include a few close guests? There’s no wrong answer—just what feels best for you.

  • Eloping solo means ultimate privacy, zero stress, and complete flexibility. Want to hike at sunrise? Say your vows in the rain? Take a spontaneous detour? It's all on your terms.
  • Bringing guests lets you share the moment with your closest people while still keeping things intimate. If you go this route, you'll have to think about logistics—choosing an accessible location, making sure there's space for everyone, and considering a post-ceremony gathering.

If you’re torn, consider a hybrid option or multi-day elopement: have a private vow exchange and then celebrate with family later.

3. PICK THE PERFECT SEATTLE ELOPEMENT LOCATION

Here are some top-tier locations for every type of Seattle elopement:

  • For Skyline Views: Kerry Park, The Smith Tower, Canlis Rooftop.
  • For Forest Magic: Rattlesnake Lake, Twin Falls, Gold Creek Pond.
  • For Mountains: Mt Rainier, Mt Baker, Hurricane Ridge
  • For Moody Beaches: Discovery Park, Ruby Beach, Rialto Beach or Second Beach.
  • For Courthouse Elopements: King County Courthouse or Seattle Municipal Courthouse (bonus: Seattle Municipal Courthouse will marry couples on a rooftop!).
  • For Waterfall Backdrops: Franklin Falls, Snoqualmie Falls, Wallace Falls.

Pro Tip: Consider accessibility for guests, permits, and the best time of year for your dream location. Not sure which locations need a permit and which don't? Don't sweat it – we'll guide you through all of the details.

4. GET YOUR MARRIAGE LICENSE

Seattle makes it pretty easy to get legally hitched, but you’ll still need to plan ahead.

  • Apply for a Washington marriage license online or in person at the King County Recorder’s Office.
  • There’s a 3-day waiting period, so don’t try to get married the same day you apply.
  • Your license is valid for 60 days.
  • You don’t need witnesses, but you do need an officiant.

5. FIND YOUR SEATTLE ELOPEMENT PLANNING DREAM TEAM

Just because you’re eloping doesn’t mean you have to do it all alone. Here’s who you might want to bring along:

  • Photographer (Hey, that’s me!)
  • Videographer (wait a sec....that's also us!)
  • Officiant (Needed for legal ceremonies – some of our favorites? Another One Ties the Knot crushes it every time)
  • Hair & Makeup Artist (For that effortless “I woke up like this” glow, Ann Timss is your gal)
  • Florist (Even a single bouquet or flower crown can elevate your look – Golderod Floral knows exactly how)
  • Planner or Coordinator (If you want zero stress – Altar Micro-Weddings has every detail down)

6. PLAN YOUR SEATTLE ELOPEMENT TIMELINE

A common elopement myth around Seattle elopement planning? That you’ll be done in an hour. Nope. Whether you’re hiking, driving to multiple spots, or just taking your time soaking in the moment, you’ll want a flexible but structured timeline. This is your time to dream big!

Example:

  • 2:00 PM – Getting ready at your Airbnb
  • 3:30 PM – First look at Discovery Park
  • 4:30 PM – Ceremony on the bluff
  • 5:00 PM – Champagne pop & portraits
  • 6:00 PM – Sunset photos at the beach
  • 7:30 PM – Private dinner downtown

7. DRESS FOR SEATTLE'S WILD WEATHER

Seattle’s weather? Unpredictable at best. Here’s how to prep:

  • Layers are your best friend – A cozy jacket, cute wrap, or even a chic raincoat.
  • Shoes matter – Hiking? Opt for waterproof boots. Beach wedding? Ditch the heels.
  • Be ready for rain – Clear umbrellas look amazing in photos. (we even provide these for our couples!)

8. PLAN YOUR POST ELOPEMENT CELEBRATION

The best part about eloping? You can celebrate however you want.

  • Book a dinner at a tasty Seattle spot – Canlis, The Walrus and the Carpenter, or Tilikum Place Café.
  • Rent an Airbnb for a private dinner party (um, what better time to book a private chef?)
  • Go full adventure mode – Helicopter ride, horseback riding, overnight cabin stay, or a weekend whale watching in the San Juans.

9. FINAL DETAILS: THE LITTLE DETAILS THAT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

  • Write Your Vows – Don’t wait until the last minute!
  • Bring Snacks & Water – Hangry couples are not cute.
  • Have a Backup Plan – Because Seattle loves a surprise rainstorm (and you probably know what we're gonna say by now...but we come up with a backup plan for every couple we work with)

COMMON MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN PLANNING YOUR SEATTLE ELOPEMENT

Even the most well-planned elopements can have hiccups. Here are some mistakes couples often make (and how to avoid them):

❌ Forgetting about permits – Some locations require a special use permit, even for tiny ceremonies. Double-check requirements for your elopement spot at least a month in advance.

❌ Not having a rain backup plan – It’s Seattle. Rain is part of the package. Whether it’s a covered area nearby or clear umbrellas (which look amazing in photos, btw), have a solid Plan B.

❌ Underestimating hiking times – If you’re hiking to your elopement location, give yourself extra time. Trails can take longer than expected, and you don’t want to be rushing right before you say your vows. Usually we recommend assuming you'll need 1.5x the amount of time you'd ordinarily need to hike it when you factor in photos.

❌ Skipping the “just us” time – If you’re inviting guests, make sure you carve out some alone time for just you two. Whether it’s a private vow exchange before the ceremony or sneaking away for golden-hour photos, having that moment together is everything.

❌ Not considering weekday elopements – Seattle’s best elopement spots get crowded on weekends. Opting for a weekday ceremony means more privacy, fewer tourists, and better availability for vendors.

❌ Ignoring sunrise & sunset timing – Light is everything for dreamy photos. Know when golden hour hits for your elopement spot and plan your timeline accordingly.

AT THE END OF THE DAY...

Eloping is about ditching the stress and focusing on what matters most—you two. Whether you’re saying “I do” on a misty mountain or in a historic courthouse, Seattle is the perfect place to craft an elopement that feels 100% you.
